Round One is Complete
July 15th, 2009 | by mmb5 |First up, some reviews:
Cat Ballou — Normally, I hate musicals. Detest them. Nobody walks around in song describing what happened. And to think this is the last visual evidence of Nat King Cole. However, wasn’t bad. Barely 3 stars.
The TV Set — Every joke can be seen coming a mile away, but they were still OK enough to move on. 3 stars.
Free Enterprise — Wow, great movie. Definitely a keeper, surprised it never had a theater release. 4 stars.
Interstate 60 — When Gary Oldman is on the screen, it’s a great movie. When it’s just James Mardsen, with his pretty boy looks and no ability to act, it’s bad. However, there’s enough Oldman to save face. 3 stars by a sliver.
Round 2 (with already selected movies listed)
Susan – Dark Knight (has picked The Curious Case of Benjamin Button for Round 2)
Mark – The Shawshank Redemption (has picked Sneakers for Round 2)
Phil C. – The Verdict (has picked Absence of Malice for Round 2)
Jim M. – Frozen River
Rogers – Barbarians at the Gate
Perry – Man on Wire (has picked Son of Rambow for Round 2)
Greg – Grizzly Man (has picked Sorcerer for Round 2)
Craig – The Dish (has picked Hot Fuzz for Round 2)
Snowed – Cat Ballou
Dwight – The TV Set
Carey – Free Enterprise
Michael – Interstate 60
For those of you who haven’t picked yet, let me know when you can.

I did not choose Absence of Malice. Someone else was inspired by my choice of the Verdict and took another Paul Newman movie. I would never choose ANY Sally Field film.
How about the Guns of the Navarone?

Well, a lot of my favorite older movies are musicals, so I guess most of them are out. Oh, well. How about the 1962 version of The Manchurian Candidate?

Yes, Oldman makes the film–and Chris Cooper. Second round is Network unless you’ve already seen it.

Hmm, since Network isn’t going to work, I’m going to take a HUGE risk and go with Saved! One of my favorites, but my taste can be a bit eclectic.

I haven’t made my second pick yet. I’ll try to post one tonight.
In other news, myself and another Not La Placa contestant have begun a blog centered on the pool:

Actually, I have picked. I chose Absence of Malice. It was wrongly attributed to Phil C.
