The Montgomery Burns Tournament for Outstanding Achievement in the Area of Popular Culture |
|
On 7 August 1999, 21 eager players journeyed to Ann Arbor, Michigan from as far away as Boston, Massachusetts and Corvallis, Oregon to participate in what would quickly become the most prestigious one-on-one trash tournaments in the history of the competition. The 1999 tournament featured James Dinan as the winner, and the 2000 version saw both Dinan (in the Masters' Division) and Doug Grote (in the Undergraduate Division) emerge as champions. 2001 saw a new chapter in Burns history, as Craig Barker took the crown vacated when James Dinan was unable to attend while Armen Terjimanian in his first appearance was the undergraduate champion. Check back in August of 2002 for results from The Fourth Annual Montgomery Burns Tournament for Outstanding Achievement in the Area of Popular Culture.

Of course, the event could not be possible without the efforts of volunteers who throughout the years have provided us with questions, and most importantly, someone to read those questions. Anne Mitchell has organized the finals questions the last three years, and her work has been nothing short of spectacular. Joe Janes has twice flown in from Seattle to read. Other people involved include Kevin Olmstead, Michael Davidson, Julie Stahlhut, Gail Celio, Noel Erinjeri, Dan Schonberg, Ben Heller, Brandy Shattuck, Phil Groce, Adam Kemezis, Mithcell Szczepanczyk, Allison Manzuk, Dave Bykowski, Lori Murphy, Emily Moore and Steve Traicoff.
