Popular Culture Tournament

Sunday, 15 January 2006

Michigan Academic Competitions (MAC), in conjunction with Michigan Buzzer Competitions (MBC), the Medical Council of Canada (MCC) and the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC), is proud to present Ann B. Davis 2006 - The Tenth Anniversary to be held on Sunday, 15 January 2006 on the Central Campus of the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor, the day after the Michigan MLK Memorial Academic Tournament.

Previous extravaganzas have included as many as 22 teams playing. The typical round-robin round-loon with playoffs will make up the day. After the regular tournament, there may be theme rounds that will provide a chance to show off how savant you are on a particular topic. The Game Show round will return with some new surprises plus others to be turned in by participants. Submittors of a theme round receive ten dollars $8 off the tournament fee. Lunch and other assorted foodstuffs will be available throughout the day.

What questions should I write? Is it true that you're picky about question length, accessability and distribution? Yep. Find out that and much more in the packet requirements. Also note that the deadline is three days earlier than last year, allowing the tournament staff to use that weekend for more editing and allow for proper question aging.

Tournament Fees

Canadian Teams are charged the par value of their funky money, but still must pay us in U$ funds. Canadian Tire Dollars or Club Zed points are not honoured. However, the tournament director will accept Crispy Crunch bars, beef flavoured Potato Crisps or Hamilton Tiger-Cat merchandise as bribes.
To register a team, please use the on-line form. I will not recognize/remember E-mails.
Please submit your packet to mmb5@earthlink.net!!

The Tournament Directors

Mike Burger Mike Burger will yet again be serving as one of the Cruise Directors/Dictators/Überlords for the festivities. Any questions or concerns should be directed to him. He is reachable either at mmb5@earthlink.net or can be reached the more-archaic ways: 2332 Nixon, Ann Arbor, MI 48105, 734-913-1059. Note that Mike is not a college student (he just plays one on TV), and normally goes to bed around 10:30. It would not be a good idea to call after 10:00.

Mike Burger is a veteran of the quiz bowl scene, launching his career with a buzz of "Jim Bakker" in a 1987 campus tournament at the University of Michigan. After leaving the scene in 1991, he came back in 1994 to help out with the University of Michigan Intramural tournament and they haven't been able to get rid of him since. Mike's team (Mike Keenan Employment Agency) was the winner of a Trash regional seven times, Trashinals in 1998, 2000 and 2003 as well as nine trash invitationals, including Trashmasters in 2001, 2003 and 2004.
Craig Barker Joining Mike for the second consecutive year will be Craig Barker. Mike is forcing Craig to stick to his "if I ever win this thing, I'm done" statement made in 2000 when the latter was coming down from a bad batch of Ding Dongs. He is reachable at cdbarker@umich.edu. Note that Craig is technically a college student in the way Ashlee Simpson technically performs live, so you can pretty much reach him any time, day or night.

Craig joined the collegiate quiz bowl scene in 1996 and made an impression early when he answered a tossup on Wink Martindale on the basis of his 1959 hit Deck of Cards. Mike sensed the force in this young man, and quickly kidnapped, brainwashed and molded this boy into the man he has become today. Including his Keenan accolades, he has also won 3 CBI regionals, 2 CBI nationals and the Ann B. Davis in 2003.
